Isle of Wight walking holidays A walking holiday is a wonderful way to explore the hidden charms of the Isle of Wight. A Wight Walks walking holiday is very flexible starting and finishing on any day of the week to suit your lifestyle. You will be walking on the Isle of Wight from one place to another carrying only a light weight day sack, stopping some where different each night, with the freedom to walk at your own pace, stop for breaks when you want and spend as long as you want exploring the villages, towns or sites of historical interest along the trail.
Known as 'The Garden Isle', this jewel of England indeed resembles a diamond in shape - being some 23 miles west to east, from The Needles to Bembridge, and 13 miles north to south, from Cowes to St. Catherine's Point. This, the smallest, and perhaps the most geographically diverse, of England's counties covering just 147 square miles and is bounded by about 60 miles of coastline. Within this watery border of the Solent to the north and the English Channel to the south lies 'an England in miniature'.
The natural processes of deposition, folding and erosion during the last 120 million years have resulted in the rich variety of the Island's surface geology. The resulting and kaleidoscopic contrasts in the Island's scenery encompass open downland, beech woods, conifer forests, grazing land, wide sandy beaches, sheer chalk cliffs, rocky coves, creeks and estuaries.
The Island is a haven for wildlife, renowned for its rare flora and fauna such as wild orchids, Glanville fritillary butterflies, little Egrets and the majestic Buzzards circling above the rolling farmland and of course the rare Red Squirrel are just a few of the delights you may well see.
Diverse Routes
Our well planned self guided routes offer the traveller the opportunity to discover the Island at your own pace starting and finishing any day of the week to suit you. We arrange your accommodation, provide maps and a guidebook describing the route and transport your luggage between overnight stops.
Comfortable accommodation This is pre-booked by us, in carefully selected establishments. You stay in comfortable family-run hotels, country inns, friendly guesthouses and farmhouse bed and breakfast's along the trail that have been carefully chosen for the warmth of their welcome, the quality of their accommodation and their accessibility to the trail. All accommodation is pre-paid so you don't have any hassle with deposits or paying for accommodation each day. We book en-suite rooms where possible, which is usually on all of the nights if booked well in advance.
Neville and Sandie have lived on the Isle of Wight all of their lives and have a great affinity with all things WIGHT! Great lovers of the countryside they have walked most of the footpaths on the Island many times. Sandie a keen horse rider has explored many remote and little used bridleways whilst exercising her horse Tom. She is also a keen environmentalist with a passion for botany and has qualifications
in local conservation and the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society). Neville’s farming back ground as an Agronomist (crop doctor) has given him an in depth knowledge of the rural Wight and its more remote areas. This has enabled them to select routes that show a range of ecological and botanical interest to enthral all walkers.
Their love of unguided walking has taken them too many parts of the UK and further a field to Tuscany in Italy and the slopes of Austria. Neville has visited many countries during his working life. However, they both feel that the Isle of Wight’s unique charms and diverse countryside are difficult to beat anywhere in the world. It was following one of their walking trips in Tuscany that the concept of Wight Walks was born.
More recently due increasing demand we have set up Move my bag. A luggage moving solution for those who want to independently arrange all their accommodation on the Island but would like their luggage moved from one place to the next. |
