Leaving the hustle and bustle of the mainland you arrive in the Victorian seaside town of Ryde via one of the longest piers carrying a railway. Jump aboard one of the 1938 ex London underground train that now operate the remaining commercial train service on the Island. A couple of stops further down the track its time change lines and step back further in time as you board the steam railway. Absorb the sounds and smell of the steam train as it travels through the Islands countryside.
A plume of steam and toot of the whistle signals your arrival at Havenstreet station the home of the steam-line. Alight on the platform and explore the award winning station and rail yard. Wander round the sidings and through the refurbishment shed where old steam carriages are being restored to their former glory.
Leaving the station and the nostalgia of the steam era you begin your exploration of the Islands hidden footpaths and ancient bridleways by foot. Meander along the woodland footpaths towards the River Medina the Islands largest tidal river and follow its shores as you skirt round Newport the Islands Capital and largest town. The open farm land embraces as you leave the river and head towards Rookley and your eveningís accommodation in an award winning countryside pub that started life as a customs and excise house.
The next morning itís an opportunity to experience some of the Islands most stunning views as climb the steep steps up Gatt Cliff and to one of the islands highest points with breath taking views to all corners of the Island and across the Solent to the Spinnaker tower in Portsmouth and beyond. The rolling downs stretch into the distance as you traverse the ridge of unique chalk pasture land with its rare flaura and forna. The wonderful vistas continue as you descend from the hills into the quaint seaside village of Shanklin with its pretty thatched cottages and waterfall in the Chine.
The last day and time to head home and once again enjoy the Island historical railways linking Shanklin through the St Boniface tunnel to Ryde and one last trip up the pier on a train.
