Guided 14-20 - Sept 10 FULL

14th to 20th September Needles & Undercliff

Day 1 - 14th September
Arrive in Shanklin by car or by train and make your way to accommodation. The afternoon and evening are yours to explore the town and relax.

Day 2 - 15th September - Windmill & Lifeboats.
A nice gentle start to the week with a stroll along the Shanklin & Sandown promenade before the long but gentle climb up the grassy slope to the top of culver cliff with stunning views on 2 sides of the island and far out to sea. Dropping down to Whitecliff bay with its wide sandy beach and clear water, before reaching the sailing town of Bembridge and a chance to stop for some lunch. Setting off after lunch we will pass the busy Bembridge lifeboat station. As we leave the town we will visit the Islands last remaining windmill built around 1700 and is now in the hands of the National Trust. From the windmill we head across the marshes to Brading before catching the train back to Shanklin.

Day 3 - 16th September - Downs & Undercliff.
A day of contrast, we climb to top of St Martins Down with magnificent views of the Island. Following the ridge to Luccombe Down before descending to the terraced Victorian town of Ventnor and a well earned lunch in the bay. After lunch we follow the coastal path through the undercliff with its own micro climate passing many secret bays where smugglers used to haunt. We turn into the wild romantic scenery of “the Landslip,” and make our way through its masses of gray rock and its numerous copses to Luccombe Chine and then follow the cliff top back to Shanklin.

Day 4 - 17th September - Obelisk.
Passing through copses, traditional small holdings and open farm land before reaching a Donkey sanctuary. We then join the Worsley trail as we climb to the top of Appledurcombe Down reaching a granite Obelisk. The obelisk placed on the summit in 1774 by Sir Richard Worsley, to the memory of his grandfather Sir Robert Worsley. Continuing upwards to the top of Stenbury Down near the radio station which, on a clear day, provides some spectacular views of much of the Island. You then walk steadily downhill to Wroxall village and time for Lunch. After lunch we climb up the otherside of the valley to St Martins down follow the Worsley trail back to Shanklin.

Day 5 - 18th September - Free Day.
Why not take a trip to one of the Islands many attractions such as Osbourne house or perhaps just relax ready for your last days walk.

Day 6 - 19th September - Alum Bay & Needles.
A chance to see the Islands most famous view. Heading out of Freshwater Bay through Afton Marsh Nature Reserve. Leading into Golden Hill Fort which was built as a defensible barracks as part of the Palmerstone defences in 1859. Heading down into the quaint Colwell bay where we stop for lunch. Joining the coastal path we pass through the spectacular Headon warren covered in Gorse and heather before reaching the top we see the first view of the Needles… The final climb up through Alum Bay to the magnificent Chalk stacks of the Needles. Finally we follow in Tennyson’s footsteps back down to Freshwater Bay.
